To better address the learning needs of our clients NIS has recently set up an office in Shanghai, China and Brisbane, Australia. Having an office in Shanghai enables NIS to better manage the transition Chinese students into the New Zealand educational environment and the office in Brisbane assists in consolidating NIS pathways into many Australian Universities. Future development of NIS is expected to involve building stronger links with market representatives in Thailand and Vietnam.

 

Courses & Subjects

The National Institute of Studies offers a range of flexible long stay programs. You must study for a minimum of 12 weeks. If you want to study for less than 12 weeks, please go to Short Courses. You can start almost every Monday and take holidays during your program, but requests for holidays must be made at least 1 month in advance.

National Certificate in Employment Skills ( Level 1)
The National Certificate in Employment Skills (“CertEmp”) course is an entry level qualification designed to develop generic employment related skills, knowledge and technical competence. It prepares students for work and provides them with confidence to undertake higher level certificate and diploma studies. The course help students develop their literacy, oracy, numeracy and other basic personal and technical skills expected at the workplace. It equips them with the basic skills required to seek work opportunities and build confidence as they prepare for further studies.

Duration : Full-time: 24 weeks

National Certificate in Retail ( Level 2 )
The National Certificate in Retail (Level 2) (“RetailCert”) course is an entry level qualification for people who are working or intending to work in the retail industry. The course introduces knowledge and skills in customer service, health & safety, routine workplace calculation and the retail business scene. It equips students with the basic skills required to work in the retail industry. It also prepares them for entry into diploma level studies.

Duration : Full-time: 24 weeks

Call Centre Certificate ( Level 3 )

The National Certificate in Call Centre Operations (NZQA Level 3), which is taught in our state-of-the-art LIVE Call Centre environment at our New Lynn campus. This is the basic qualification for people working in a contact centre (sometimes referred to as call centre). Holders of the certificate have demonstrated that they are able to work effectively in a contact centre environment, where they communicate with customers or the public using a variety of media for the purposes of customer services, marketing, information gathering, operating a help desk, or similar functions. The competencies gained in this qualification are also a useful foundation for other occupations in the sales and service environment. Courses delivery:Students may choose to complete this qualification either full-time or part-time.

National Certificate in Tourism & Travel ( Level 3 )
The National Certificate in Tourism & Travel (Core skills) (“CertT&T”) is a level 3 qualification designed to develop the skills, knowledge and technical competence in customer service and business communications. The course helps students develop the skills, knowledge and technical competence to undertake work in the tourism and travel industries. It also prepares them for entry into higher level studies.

Duration : Full-time: 24 weeks


TEFL Certificate ( Level 5 )

The NIS TEFL course aims to enable those with little or no previous teaching experience to successfully teach an TEFL group of learners. The trainees will get all tools (methodology, skills, material etc.) to do it effectively. The course will provide for integration and application of a foundational theoretical approach to language teaching. The course includes classes on methodology, language awareness, classroom management, materials analysis, material production, and phonology. It also includes supervised teaching practice where the participants have the opportunity to try out and reflect on their teaching skills in a supportive environment, teaching classes and groups at different levels, discussing the experience afterwards with peers and the tutor.

Duration : 12 Weeks

Certificate in Foundation Studies Program ( Level 4 )
NIS Foundation Studies Program is a National Qualification Framework Unit Standard Base Qualification. It is designed to meet NZQA University Entrance Standard & equivalent to NCEA (Level 3). NIS Foundation Studies Program offers:
  • Experienced, Quality teaching to suit your individual needs,
  • Ample of contact hours in an intensive and supportive learning environment
  • A curriculum that develops your independent learning skills to help you succeed at university

Program Structure The Program is made up of five courses taken over two semesters - starting in February, July or November. Intakes: Please contact us at info@nis.ac.nz, for the next intake dates.

You will have to take the following 3 compulsory subjects:

  • FSP011 English

You can choose 2 electives from:

25 contact hours per week and in addition you are expected to spend at least 20 hours per week in unsupervised self-study.

Successful completion To complete the Program successfully, you will need an average of 50% (C) in each subject. On successful completion of the Foundation Program, you will be awarded a minimum 83 credits.

Entry Requirements: To enrol in the Program, you need an English language proficiency equivalent to an IELTS band score of 5.0 (with no sub-score below 4.5), a TOEFL score of 525 (195 in the computer-based test) You must be at least 17 years old and have completed secondary school to a satisfactory standard.

Duration: Full time: one year, Main Intakes Dates: Feb, April, July and September

Information Technology Certificate ( Level 4 )

The IT Certificate (Level 4) is designed for people intending to work in the New Zealand Computer Industry, like Information systems Information technology, Multimedia, Network Support etc. It is specifcally designed for students who have a tertiary qualification in another field and also working people who have work experience in the IT field and who wish to upgrade their skills and qualification in Information Systems. Students and working people can specialize in one or two areas.

Duration: Combined course with Diploma in IT and Business Applications ( Level 5 )

National Diploma in Business (Level 5)

The aims of this course are:

• To facilitate opportunities for international students to explore and understand how businesses in New Zealand operate. • To provide international students with an introduction to core principles of business– Marketing, Accounting, Human Resource Management, Financial Management, Information Technology and Law. • To develop the skills required to manage and operate in a global business market - critical thinking, problem solving, inter-personal communications and working as a team.

This qualification can build on the skills developed in the National Certificate in Business (Level 4) [Ref: 0782] or those contained in the National Certificate in Business Administration [Ref: 0634] and the National Certificate in First Line Management [Ref: 0649]. It can lead to higher level qualifications requiring a greater level of specialization and competence including the National Diploma in Business (Level 6) [Ref: 0784]. The range of qualifications is designed to provide a coherent set of qualifications that provide flexible entry and exit points and allow specialization to meet the requirements of individual role holders.

National diploma in Business ( Level 6 )

National Diploma in Business Level 6 (“NDipBusL6”) course is a course to be delivered over two semesters. It is developed by the institute and approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. The course consists of six (6) modules. Each module is designated to contain approximately 20 National Qualifications Framework credits. This is to allow for each module to be completed in a similar duration.

The NDipBusL6 is an advance diploma programme to be completed over one academic year of full-time study or equivalent of 2 years part-time study. The programme is a broadly based Business and Management qualification that will qualify you for entry into a wide range of careers within a range of industries that requires people with the knowledge and skill in business & management areas. It also prepares you for entry into further university and other tertiary level studies.

COMPONENTS / MODULES

The teaching and learning shall be theme based. The course will be divided into six (6) modules and shall be sequenced in the following proposed teaching cycles:

Entry requirements
To enroll in the NDipBusL6 course, international students will need to meet the following minimum requirements:-

Applicants need to present evidence of one of the following:-
1. National Diploma in Business (Level 5) or an equivalent Level 5 business & management qualification gained at a New Zealand institution;
2. An overseas business & management diploma / degree qualification equivalent to or higher than those for entry into a level 6 business & management diploma programme.

~English Language
Overseas applicants need also to show evidence of one or more of the following:-
1. An English language proficiency equivalent to an IELTS band score of 5.5 (with no sub-score below 5.0);
2. An English language qualification equivalent to the above and subject to passing the NIS internal Entry Examination for Business Studies courses.

Applicants who possess qualifications other than the above may be considered on a case-to-case basis. However, such qualifications to be considered shall not be below that required for entry into a university sub-degree programme.

New Zealand Diploma in Business (Level 6)

The NZDipBus is a sub-degree programme designed as a broadly based business qualification that will qualify students for entry into a wide range of business careers. It also prepares students for entry into further university studies and is recognised by a number of professional bodies such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand, New Zealand Bankers’ Institute and the New Zealand Institute of Management.

The NZDipBus programme is a Level 6 qualification and has a total of 240 credits. It has a course length of two years of full-time study or equivalent part-time study. The programme shall be completed in four semesters and each semester shall have duration of ten (10) weeks inclusive of a week set aside for final examinations.

COMPONENTS / MODULES: To be awarded the NZDipBus, students are to pass twelve papers. These papers must include the six (6) core papers and six (6) elective papers. The following papers are offered over the four semesters:

Entry Requirements
Applicants need to present evidence of one of the following:

1. NCEA (level 3) with achievement standards that meet the numeracy and literacy requirements and shall include the following:
- 4 credits at Level 2 (or higher) in Reading
- 4 credits at Level 2 (or higher) in Writing
- 14 credits at Level 1 (or higher) in Mathematics

2. An overseas academic qualification equivalent to or higher than NCEA Level 3
English Language
Applicants need to show evidence of one or more of the following:

  • An English language proficiency equivalent to an IELTS band score of 6.0* (with no sub-score below 5.5);
  • A National Institute of Studies (“NIS”) General English Course Certificate – Upper Intermediate level;
  • An English language qualification equivalent to the above and subject to the NIS Entry Examination.

Applicants with an IELTS band score of 5.5 may be accepted on condition that they are concurrently enrolled in the NIS ESOL and Tertiary Studies Skills classes or must have an IELTS score of 6.0 (academic) with no individual band lower than 5.5 or TOEFL score of 550.

NIS Diploma in Business ( Level 7)

The course will equip students with the knowledge, skills and technical competence to take up marketing management roles in business operations both within New Zealand and overseas workplaces. Graduate may be able to use the qualification to seek entry into business and management courses at higher levels in universities and other institutions of higher learning.

Entry Requirments:

National Diploma in Business (Level 6) or equivalent. A suitable amount of appropriate industry experience will be considered, in which case an entry test may be considered. For international students an English Language IELTS band of 6.0 (no sub-score below 5.5) or equivalent is required.
Applicants who possess qualifications other than the above may be considered on a case-to-case basis.

Course Outcome and Future Pathway:

The graduate has developed the skills, knowledge and technical competence to apply business and management principles and practices in managing marketing operations. Graduate are also equipped with a range of current marketing sill sets.

Graduates are also prepared to undertake further tertiary studies and are able to use the qualification to pathway to business and management degree courses in universities and polytechnics with possible credit transfers.
