The Story behind the Shield

Directors of the National Institute of Studies (“NIS”) sought to have an emblem designed that reflected the guiding philosophy of the institution. The task proved to be quite difficult, after seeking the assistance of various designers, still to no avail, Institute owner /Founding Director Marion Kerepeti Edwards  took it upon her self to draft  the Shield bearing in mind all that she wanted the Institution to stand for. She thought of the constellation known to Maori as Te Kahui o Mahutonga or The Southern Cross which is depicted on the New Zealand Flag. The Constellation gives direction. For century’s Maori and other cultures have depended upon the stars as navigational tools offering direction. The constellation also reflects our ambition “to be NZ based, recognized both nationally and internationally as a successfully networked organization”.
The Koru symbol was then chosen to be depicted directly below the Southern Cross, once again reaffirming the founding of the institution in Aotearoa, New Zealand also reflecting our unique identity as a registered Maori private training establishment. (sentence deleted) Networking amongst a diverse range of communities enhances the primary relationship through the inclusion of multi-cultural staff and the blending of knowledge skill and culture. By so doing, NIS provides a globally focused learning and networking environment for business education from which students and staff form a sound capacity for global networking”.
The Poutama or stairway to heaven motif was then chosen to represent the importance of Perseverance. The Poutama depicts the story of the Maori Ancestor Tawhaki who is said to have traversed the poutama to the Heavens where he received from the creator Three Kete / Baskets  known as Nga Kete o te Wananga / the baskets of Knowledge, each kete containing knowledge of some degree. It is said that each of us carry with us three Kete that we take with us whilst we traverse the pathway of life, it is said that the most important of knowledge comes from the different experiences, relationships, interactions and trials that life brings. The Stairway motif is an affirmation of our Mission to "Educate and network for success”
